A simple way to correct subtitle timing for .avi movies?

ctrl-h will increase the subtitle delay (by 50 milliseconds)
ctrl-j will decrease the delay

If you want to change those hotkey settings you can do it through Settings – Preferences – Interface – Hotkeys settings (make sure to check the Advanced options checkbox). I don’t know of any way to set the delay through options.

If you want to modify the timing of the subtitle in the subtitle file, there are tools to do that. Aegisub, Subtitle Workshop, etc
